Home Tour Series: Living Room

The front entry leads into the living room.
Therefore, chosen to be the first room to be transformed. First impressions are everything.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BEFORE
The previous owners kindly left this really contemporary window treatment that was elaborately hooked to the wall with a ridiculous amount of screws and plates. Luckily I now know how to spackle.
There is a good size fireplace that will definitely get some use this winter.

DURING THE TRANSFORMATION
This project began on moving day!

Dec. 4: First, we took the lovely drapes down and placed them in a special area for safe keeping. Then it was down to business: taped drop cloths to the base boards, started to spackle the screw holes in the walls, and even painted a portion of the wood detail. My first home improvement!
Dec. 5: The following day the ceiling was painted with Behr white ceiling paint (Thanks Johnny Petersen!), as well as, the trim with Behr ultra white trim paint.
Dec. 6: Sanded and touched up spackle work to prep for painting. Started on the second coat on trim.
Painting trim is tedious on its own, but to make matters more complicated it is dentil crown molding (shown below) which has basically the most grooves possible, but looks classy.

Dec. 7: After work try to finish second coat of trim.. might need a third. NOOO!I'm so ready to paint the walls!

Third one down -----> Brilliant Sea.

Dec. 8: Micah kindly finished the second coat of trim and detemined with much hesitation that the trim would need a third coat to get the crisp ultra white look. Who puts dark beige walls and light beige trim in a house?! Dull, get a personality!

Dec. 9: Finally the trim is complete and the brightness of the white burns my eyes.. perfect! The room is completely prepped for painting the walls, wish it wasn't so late because something on the walls is all we have been talking about.

Dec. 10: Unfortunately, we are both working doubles today so there isn't much progress we can get done, but heroicly the Trim-Master himself (Sam Denton for those who don't know him for his reputation) shows up in his paint clothes and ready to work! With precision he cut this large room with two coats of the blue paint without using painters tape, daring.  There were a lot of trips to the local Home Depot for necessities.
We got off work and he had already turned in for the night, but that paint bug was still itching at us so we stayed up and painted the first coat of blue on the walls... but the product left us feeling skeptical about the color choice.

Dec. 11: Pleasantly awoken to coffee and biscuits from Hardees, the day started off well. Luckily, Raechel Rich saved the day and picked up my morning shift, which I didn't know about until I was leaving last night, THANKS! Now for a productive day. Anxiously I painted the second coat of blue on the walls and after it dried I felt very relieved. It it bright, not too dark, and it will be a great canvas for the black and white accents that I am going to create.

The best feeling is ripping (carefully) the painters tape off the edges of the room and seeing the sharp lines created where the blue meets the white. Not too much admiring went on since  plenty more work to be done.
One room down! Accomplished.

Finally the room is ready for furniture, decor and set for my vision!

Dec. 19: The first piece of furniture purchased, a black and white settee from Target, it was only available online (apparently my card doesn't work online so I used an intermediate, Mr. Hodge made my furniture dreams come true):
(A settee is a mix between a bench, chaise lounge, and love seat, so I have it all)

The settee is going in front of the picture window, the low back allows for an almost unobstructed view to the outdoors.

Dec. 20: I've been on the hunt for a sofa and finally found on at Ashley Furniture:
This comfortably fits three and sits facing the wall by the fireplace.
Dec. 26: Day after Chrismas and the Denton side of the family show up to put in hours of blood, sweat and tears! Thanks for Ruth, Jean, Meg, Jim, and of course Mr. Denton himself for all the help!! On this day in the living room in particular a crucial piece was added, the tv mount. (It was purchased at Best Buy for a discounted $62 since they price matched Amazon.com - steal of a DEAL! - Thanks to Micah's iphone)

Dec. 27: Let the projects begin: Today I took the brass chandelier from the dining room to repurpose into a candleabra that will hang from the ceiling by the fireplace. First, Savannah sanded all the pieces. Then, I spray painted it with two coats of Rust O'leum black satin and then glossy; watch out for the glossy paint because it has a tendency to run.

Jan. 18: I found a wall mounted tv wire concealer that organize cords for the tv at Home Depot for under $20. Micah painted it brillian sea blue to match the walls in the living room and without using the instructions attached it to the wall. After installation it looks sleek and really cleans up the messy look of cords. That isn't the actual stand we are using underneath the tv but it works for now
 (thanks Michael Fulcher).

Jan. 21: Finally time for crafting my own decor and we need a time device in the main room. Both of us wanted the melted clock look so whosever came out the best would be put on the mantle. Of course I won, but Micah is repurposing his as an art display show later.
It wasn't hard at all.. buy the clock mechanism at Hobby Lobby, I decided to get different hands than came with the kit. If I had realized I would have kept the other hands to make earrings.

Jan. 22: The night that we decided to-do tons of fun projects... I had bought a cheap bookshelf at target and wanted to fancy it up so that it would match the living room a bit better... by adding the shelf liner that is close to the pattern on the settee I have tied in the piece, but the hard part was finding more shelf liner that matched. Four targets later I came out with the last three rolls that I think that have in the state so I am going to use it wisely.

Also, it is purposely put to the side to add interest to a possibly drap area. Above it I plan on putting a sunburst mirror (that I have already bought the supplies for) in order to reflect some of that light from the large front window.
